RESUMO

Objectives: To present a simple form of vocal and breathing conditioning for voice professionals based on concepts from vocal science. The vocal conditioning program called Voice Athletes Conditioning uses the principles of exercise physiology to gradually improve vocal and respiratory overload to achieve endurance, power, and flexibility. Methods: Due to our personal experience with high voice users, we synthesized a vocal conditioning program (AVCP) that combines voice science, exercise physiology, sports science and physical therapy principles. This is an 8-week program of daily vocal and breathing exercises with overload enhancement each week using different types of breathing devices and semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, designed and developed according to the specific requirements and performance of the voice professional. Reflections: Professional voice users often experience episodes of vocal fatigue that can directly affect their performance and vocal health. As with physical training for athletes, voice exercises can also contribute to improving vocal conditioning, preventing voice disorders, as well as helping to obtain better performance, greater tolerance to fatigue and shorter recovery time. Conclusions: AVCP is an approach that considers the principles of muscle training aimed objectively at the respiratory and vocal muscles, carried out with a variety of breathing devices and specific vocal exercises in search of greater performance time, less physiological stress, and shorter recovery time in the professional use of the voice.


Objetivos: Presentar una forma sencilla de acondicionamiento vocal y respiratorio para profesionales de la voz, basada en conceptos de la ciencia vocal. El programa de acondicionamiento vocal denominado Voice Athletes Conditioning utiliza los principios de la fisiología del ejercicio para mejorar gradualmente la sobrecarga vocal y respiratoria, con el fin de lograr resistencia, potencia y flexibilidad. Métodos: Debido a nuestra experiencia personal con usuarios de voz aguda, sintetizamos un programa de acondicionamiento vocal (AVCP) que combina principios de la ciencia de la voz, la fisiología del ejercicio, las ciencias del deporte y la fisioterapia. Se trata de un programa de 8 semanas de ejercicios vocales y respiratorios diarios con realce de sobrecarga cada semana utilizando diferentes tipos de dispositivos respiratorios y ejercicios semioclusivos del tracto vocal, diseñado y desarrollado de acuerdo con los requerimientos específicos y el rendimiento del profesional de la voz. Reflexiones: Los usuarios profesionales de la voz experimentan a menudo episodios de fatiga vocal que pueden afectar directamente su rendimiento y salud vocal. Al igual que ocurre con el entrenamiento físico de los deportistas, los ejercicios vocales también pueden contribuir a mejorar el acondicionamiento vocal, prevenir trastornos de la voz, además de ayudar a obtener un mejor rendimiento, una mayor tolerancia a la fatiga y un menor tiempo de recuperación. Conclusiones: El AVCP es un enfoque que considera los principios del entrenamiento muscular dirigido objetivamente a la musculatura respiratoria y vocal, realizado con diversos aparatos respiratorios y ejercicios vocales específicos en busca de un mayor tiempo de actuación, menor estrés fisiológico y menor tiempo de recuperación en el uso profesional de la voz.

INTRODUCTION: Protocols for obtaíníng the maxímum threshold pressure have been applied wíth límited precision to evaluate ínspiratory muscle endurance. In thís sense, new protocols are needed to allow more relíable measurements. The purpose of the present study was to compare a new incremental ramp load protocol for the evaluation of ínspíratory muscle endurance wíth the most used protocol in healthy indíviduals. METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study carried out ín a síngle center. Nínety-two healthy indíviduals (43 men [22 ± 3 years] and 49 women [22 ± 3 years]) were randomly allocated to perform: (i) íncremental ramp load protocol and (íí) íncremental step loadíng protocol. The sustained pressure threshold (or maximum threshold pressure), maximum threshold pressure/dynamic strength índex ratío, time untíl task faílure, as well as dífference between the mean heart rate of the last five mínutes of baselíne and the peak heart rate of the last 30 seconds of each protocol were measured. RESULTS: Incremental ramp load protocol wíth small íncreases in the load and starting from mínímum values of strength index was able to evaluate the inspiratory muscle endurance through the maxímum threshold pressure of healthy indívíduals. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that the íncremental ramp load protocol is able to measure maximum threshold pressure in a more thorough way, wíth less progression and greater accuracy in the load stratification compared to the límited incremental step loading protocol and with a safe and expected cardiovascular response in healthy individuals.

The data presented in this manuscript describe craniofacial landmark coordinate values, muscle and load moment arm lengths, and mechanical advantage rates for constructing a three-dimensional model of masticatory muscles. Cone-beam computed tomography scans from 30 subjects (aged 12-19 years, 16 females) were used. Thirty-six craniofacial landmarks were identified. Subsequently, the moment arms for 7 muscles and their corresponding load moment arms at incisor and molar positions were determined. Then, the three-dimensional mechanical advantage for each muscle and tooth position was calculated as the ratio of muscle moment arm to load moment arm. This procedure was repeated three times by a main examiner and once by two other examiners. The Friedman test and the square root of the 'method of moments' variance estimator were used to compare data among examiners and calculate random errors, respectively. Although the values for the craniofacial landmark coordinates and biomechanical variables are very close, differences were found between measurements, especially in the interexaminer comparisons. Values served as the basis for reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient) and errors (average mean of absolute differences) analysis in the research paper titled "A three-dimensional method to calculate mechanical advantage in mandibular function: Intra- and interexaminer reliability study," published in the Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor myofascial pain is one of the pelvic floor dysfunction diseases disturbing women after delivery. There is a lack of objective standardization for the diagnosis of pelvic floor myofascial pain due to the various symptoms and the dependence on the palpating evaluation. Ultrasound imaging has the advantages of safety, simplicity, economy and high resolution, which makes it an ideal tool for the assistant diagnosis of pelvic floor myofascial pain and evaluation after treatment. METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control study including women accepting evaluation of pelvic floor function at 6 weeks to 1 year postpartum. They were divided into pelvic floor myofascial pain group and normal control group. A BCL 10-5 biplane transducer was applied to observed their puborectalis. The length, minimum width, area, deficiency, deficiency length, deficiency width, deficiency area, rate of deficiency area, local thickening,angle between the tendinous arch of levator ani muscle and puborectalis of corresponding puborectalis in different groups were observed and measured. RESULTS: A total of 220 postpartum women participated in the study, with 77 in the pelvic floor myofascial pain group and 143 in the normal control group. The Intraclass correlation coefficient value was over 0.750, and Kappa ranged from 0.600 to 0.800. puborectalis deficiency (adjusted odds ratio = 11.625, 95% confidence interval = 4.557-29.658) and focal thickening (adjusted odds ratio = 16.891, 95% confidence interval = 1.819-156.805) were significantly associated with higher odds of having postpartum pelvic floor myofascial pain. Grayscale or the angle between the arch tendineus levator ani and puborectalis measurements on the pain side tended to be smaller than on the non-pain side in patients with unilateral puborectalis or iliococcygeus pain (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that transvaginal ultrasound was a potentially efficient technique for evaluating postpartum pelvic floor myofascial pain due to its ability to assess various sonographic characteristics of the levator ani muscles.

BACKGROUND: Facial muscles, particularly those involved in mastication, play a pivotal role in the chewing process. Despite their influence on chewing, these muscles undergo alterations during mastication. Examining the relationship between chewed substances and muscle activity can provide insights into various pathological processes and aid in the development of therapeutic chewing techniques. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different commercially available chewing gums on the activity of key masticatory muscles. METHOD: Twenty-two participants were recruited for the study. They were instructed to chew four commercially available gums: group 1 comprised sugar gum with a strong flavor; group 2 included gum containing sorbitol; group 3 consisted of gum containing xylitol; and group 4 provided sugar gum with a mild flavor. Electromyogram (EMG) recordings were utilized to assess muscle activity. Various aspects of muscle activity, including chewing time, maximum muscle potential, and coordination between different muscles, were evaluated. Data tabulation and analysis were performed using IBM SPSS software version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULT: Analysis revealed that in terms of temporalis symmetry, group 2 exhibited the highest mean deviation, while for masseter symmetry, group 3 demonstrated the highest mean deviation. The total deviation for the temporalis and masseter muscles was 72.16% and 65.55%, respectively, indicating greater symmetry in the temporalis muscle. Additionally, group 3 displayed the highest mean deviation in both left and right-sided synergic activity of the muscles. The total deviation for the right and left sides was 64.34% and 65.67%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that sugar-free chewing gums elicit increased muscle activity compared to sugar-containing chewing gums. Furthermore, the utilization of calorie-free chewing gums with a firm texture was associated with better-coordinated muscle activity. These results provide valuable insights into the effects of different chewing gums on masticatory muscle function and coordination, which may have implications for therapeutic interventions and oral health management.

Vaginal laxity (VL) is a common condition among multiparous women, especially those who have delivered vaginally. Since pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) work synergistically with other core muscles, physical therapy protocols that aim to treat VL should train the PFMs in combination with other core muscles. To investigate the activity of core muscles in multiparous women with and without VL, and its relation to sexual function. An observational, cross-sectional study. The study included 100 multiparous women, who were divided into two groups according to their scores on the vaginal laxity questionnaire (VLQ). Women who scored between 1 and 3 on the VLQ were categorized as having VL (n = 48), while those who scored between 5 and 7 were placed in the control group (n = 52). The primary outcomes were PFM displacement, diaphragmatic excursion, transversus abdominis activation ratio, and lumbar multifidus thickness measured by ultrasound imaging. The secondary outcome was sexual functioning, evaluated using the Arabic female sexual function index (ArFSFI). The VL group had significantly lower PFM displacement (mean difference (MD) - 0.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) - 0.49 to - 0.33; p = 0.001), diaphragmatic excursion (MD - 2.75; 95% CI - 2.95 to - 2.55; p = 0.001), lumbar multifidus thickness (MD - 10.08; 95% CI - 14.32 to - 5.82; p = 0.02), and ArFSFI scores (MD - 9.2; 95% CI - 10.59 to - 7.81; p = 0.001) in comparison to the control group (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, the transversus abdominis activation ratio demonstrated no significant difference between the two groups (MD 0.06; 95% CI - 0.05 to 0.17; p = 0.33). Multiparous women with VL had significantly lower PFM displacement, diaphragmatic excursion, lumbar multifidus thickness, and sexual function index scores than women in the control group. The only exception was transversus abdominis activation, which did not differ significantly between the VL and control groups.

Acute calcific longus colli tendinitis is a differential diagnosis of neck pain. Typical presentation consists in a triad of symptoms including acute onset neck pain, neck stiffness and odynophagia. Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for acute calcific longus colli tendinitis diagnosis and the main radiological findings include prevertebral soft tissue swelling and the presence of amorphous calcifications. The case involves a 39-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with acute unilateral cervical pain that resulted in acute calcific longus colli tendinitis.

The load-adaptive behavior of the muscles in the human musculoskeletal system offers great potential for minimizing resource and energy requirements in many technical systems, especially in drive technology and robotics. However, the lack of knowledge about suitable technical linear actuators that can reproduce the load-adaptive behavior of biological muscles in technology is a major reason for the lack of successful implementation of this biological principle. In this paper, therefore, the different types of linear actuators are investigated. The focus is particularly on artificial muscles and rope pulls. The study is based on literature, on the one hand, and on two physical demonstrators in the form of articulated robots, on the other hand. The studies show that ropes are currently the best way to imitate the load-adaptive behavior of the biological model in technology. This is especially illustrated in the context of this paper by the discussion of different advantages and disadvantages of the technical linear actuators, where ropes, among other things, have a good mechanical and control behavior, which is very advantageous for use in an adaptive system. Finally, the next steps for future research are outlined to conclude how ropes can be used as linear actuators to transfer load-adaptive lightweight design into technical applications.

RESUMO

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a powerful tool for ultrastructural analyses of biological specimens at their surface. With comb jellies being very soft and full of water, many methodological difficulties limit their microanatomical studies via SEM. Here, we describe SEM protocols and approaches successfully tested on ctenophores Pleurobrachia bachei and Beroe abyssicola. Our SEM investigation revealed the astonishing diversity of ciliated structures in all major functional systems, different receptor types, and complex muscular architecture. These protocols can also be practical for various basal bilaterian lineages such as cnidarians.

Ctenophores are the descendants of the earliest surviving lineage of ancestral metazoans, predating the branch leading to sponges (Ctenophore-first phylogeny). Emerging genomic, ultrastructural, cellular, and systemic data indicate that virtually every aspect of ctenophore biology as well as ctenophore development are remarkably different from what is described in representatives of other 32 animal phyla. The outcome of this reconstruction is that most system-level components associated with the ctenophore organization result from convergent evolution. In other words, the ctenophore lineage independently evolved as high animal complexities with the astonishing diversity of cell types and structures as bilaterians and cnidarians. Specifically, neurons, synapses, muscles, mesoderm, through gut, sensory, and integrative systems evolved independently in Ctenophora. Rapid parallel evolution of complex traits is associated with a broad spectrum of unique ctenophore-specific molecular innovations, including alternative toolkits for making an animal. However, the systematic studies of ctenophores are in their infancy, and deciphering their remarkable morphological and functional diversity is one of the hot topics in biological research, with many anticipated surprises.

BACKGROUND: The postural control and abdominal muscles' automatic activity were found to be impaired in subjects with low back pain (LBP) during static activities. However, the studies are predominantly conducted on younger adults and a limited number of studies have evaluated abdominal muscles' automatic activity during dynamic standing activities in subjects with LBP. The present study investigated the automatic activity of abdominal muscles during stable and unstable standing postural tasks in older adults with and without LBP. METHODS: Twenty subjects with and 20 subjects without LBP were included. The thickness of the transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles was measured during rest (in supine), static, and dynamic standing postural tasks. To estimate automatic muscle activity, each muscle's thickness during a standing task was normalized to its thickness during the rest. Standing postural tasks were performed using the Biodex Balance System. RESULTS: The mixed-model analysis of variance revealed that task dynamicity significantly affected thickness change only in the TrA muscle (P = 0.02), but the main effect for the group and the interaction were not significantly different (P > 0.05). There were no significant main effects of the group, task dynamicity, or their interaction for the IO and EO muscles (P > 0.05). During dynamic standing, only the TrA muscle in the control group showed greater thickness changes than during the static standing task (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Standing on a dynamic level increased the automatic activity of the TrA muscle in participants without LBP compared to standing on a static level. Further research is required to investigate the effects of TrA muscle training during standing on dynamic surfaces for the treatment of older adults with LBP.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the parametric value of T2 with and without fat suppression (FS) on T2 mapping for the evaluation of extraocular muscles (EOMs) in mild thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). METHODS: We prospectively recruited 44 consecutive patients with mild TAO seen between May 2020 and October 2022 and 26 healthy controls with no history of eye- or thyroid-related or other autoimmune diseases. Patients with mild TAO were subdivided into active and inactive groups based on their clinical activity scores. The T2 of each EOM was measured over a large and small area of interest on T2-mapping images with and without FS. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of T2 for detecting TAO activity. RESULTS: The T2 was significantly and heterogeneously higher in the active group than in the inactive and control groups (P < 0.05). FS-T2-mapping images had better signal display within and at the edges of the EOMs than those without FS. It was possible to observe high-signal aggregation visible in the periphery of some EOMs, and the central part showed relatively low signals. The maximum T2 measured in small or large areas with and without FS had good diagnostic efficacy for TAO activity, with that of no-FS being better (the area under the ROC curve of the maximum T2 measured in a small area and a large area without FS was 1.0 and 1.0 and P values of < 0.001 and < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Maximal T2 with or without FS can facilitate the early clinical detection of mild TAO activity. The maximum T2 in a small area can facilitate active staging of patients with mild TAO.

Muscles featuring high frequency and high stroke linear actuation are essential for animals to achieve superior maneuverability, agility, and environmental adaptability. Artificial muscles are yet to match their biological counterparts, due to inferior actuation speed, magnitude, mode, or adaptability. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of natural muscles, we create artificial muscles that are powerful, responsive, robust, and adaptable. The artificial muscles consist of knots braided from 3D printed liquid crystal elastomer fibers and thin heating threads. The unique hierarchical, braided knot structure offers amplified linear stroke, force rate and damage-tolerance, verified by both numerical simulations and experiments. In particular, the square knotted artificial muscle shows reliable cycles of actuation at 1Hz in 3000m depth underwater. Potential application is demonstrated by propelling a model boat. Looking ahead, our knotted artificial muscles could empower novel biomedical devices and soft robots to explore various environments, from inside human body to the mysterious deep sea. Introduction: Hypopressive exercise (HE) can be viewed as a mind-body activity, characterized by the integration of breath control and stretching postures. Proponents of HE claim that this type of training can offer potential therapeutic or health benefits. To date, there is no existing comprehensive published overview on HE. This scoping review aims to map and summarize the current literature reporting data on HE and identify key knowledge gaps and future research directions. Methods: This review considered studies that report on the immediate, short-, or long-term practice of HE regardless of condition, sex, age, and/or level of practice or physical condition. Any context or setting was considered for inclusion. This review was performed in accordance with the methodological framework proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute and by Arksey and O'Malley. MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception up to July 2023. Literature was mapped following the Patterns-Advances-Gaps-Evidence for Practice Recommendations framework to identify patterns and inform practice. Results: In total, 87 studies were identified that reported on the following themes: (1) therapeutic application of a short- or long-term HE programs (n = 56); (2) physiologic and physical responsiveness to a short- or long-term HE programs (n = 22); (3) psychologic and behavioral response to a short-term HE program (n = 14); and (4) acute or immediate physiological responses (n = 21). Literature gaps included poor methodological design, incomplete reporting of intervention, lack of male participants, and exploration of muscle groups distinct from the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. Discussion: There is a need for high-quality randomized controlled trials, adherence to reporting guidelines on exercise, and the use of active control groups to verify clinical significance, the dose response, and health applications of HE.

Dysfunction of the facial musculature can have significant physical, social, and psychological consequences. In surgeries such as cleft surgery or craniofacial bimaxillary osteotomies, the perioral facial muscles may be detached or severed, potentially altering their functional vectors and mimicry capabilities. Ensuring correct reconstruction and maintenance of anatomical sites and muscle vectors is crucial in these procedures. However, a standardized method for perioperative assessment of the facial musculature and function is currently lacking. The aim of this study was to develop a workflow to analyse the three-dimensional vectors of the facial musculature using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. A protocol for localizing the origins and insertions of these muscles was established. The protocol was implemented using the 3DMedX computer program and tested on 7 Tesla MRI scans obtained from 10 healthy volunteers. Inter- and intra-observer variability were assessed to validate the protocol. The absolute intra-observer variability was 2.6 mm (standard deviation 2.0 mm), and absolute inter-observer variability was 2.6 mm (standard deviation 1.5 mm). This study presents a reliable and reproducible method for analysing the spatial relationships and functional significance of the facial muscles. The workflow developed facilitates perioperative assessment of the facial musculature, potentially aiding clinicians in surgical planning and potentially enhancing the outcomes of midface surgery.

PURPOSE: Awareness of normative values of extra orbital structures would provide useful information to interpret the radiological images better and use them for diagnostic purposes. This study aimed to reveal the average values of major extraocular structures measured on magnetic resonance images. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, magnetic resonance (MR) images of 256 orbits of 128 patients were re-interpreted regarding the measurements of major orbital structures. Extraocular muscles, superior ophthalmic vein, and optic nerve-sheath complex were measured on orbital MR images of these patients. The data distributions were presented by box-plot analyses for each parameter, and the measurement results were analyzed regarding gender and age groups. RESULTS: Lateral rectus muscle thickness (LR), inferior rectus muscle thickness (IR), globe position (GP), and interzygomatic line (IZL) values were higher in the male group than in the female group (p values were < 0.001, 0.003, 0.020, and < 0.001 respectively). LR, the thickness of the superior group muscles (SUP GR), IR, superior oblique muscle thickness (SOBL), and the thickness of optic nerve-sheath complex (ON) values indicated a significant relationship between age groups. There was a significant, positive, and low-level correlation between age and LR, SUP GR, and IR values (p values were < 0.001, 0.001, and < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study provides quantitative data on normative values of orbital structures with gender and age group comparisons. Clinicians or surgeons can easily use the measured values to gather diagnostic information from the orbital region.

BACKGROUND: The muscles present in the pelvic girdle compartment demonstrate clinically significant anatomical variation regarding both their site of attachment and additions, such as accessory heads, muscles or tendinous slips. Many of those variations might be considered potential traps during ultrasound examination that may result in misdiagnosis. The aim of this study was to raise awareness of such possibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search for morphological variations was performed in PubMed and NIH. Relevant papers were listed and citation tracking was accomplished. RESULTS: Although several anatomical variations of pelvic girdle muscles have been presented, few studies have examined their relevance in ultrasound imaging. CONCLUSIONS: The morphological variability of the pelvic girdle muscles does not vary from such incidence in other regions of the human body; however further ultrasound studies are needed of the numerous morphological variants that can be found in this region.

Objectives: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are common in older individuals and lead to pain, spinal deformities, and limited mobility. Paraspinal muscle function correlates with fracture severity, and this association may be more significant in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, studies on the effects of OVCFs are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between OVCFs, fat infiltration, and muscle atrophy in patients with LSS. Methods: This study included 177 patients with preoperative LSS, of whom 16 had OVCFs and 161 did not. Lumbar lordosis angle, fat infiltration, and paraspinal muscle atrophy were evaluated in these patients. Information on patient characteristics such as smoking, diabetes, hemodialysis, steroid use, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, and bladder or bowel dysfunction were obtained from medical records. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors independently associated with OVCF. Results: Patients in the OVCF group were significantly older (P=0.006) than those without fractures, and a higher proportion of the OVCF group showed muscle atrophy (P=0.034). Significant variables and those with moderate effect sizes were included in the logistic regression analysis. Muscle atrophy (P=0.028) was independently associated with OVCF. Conclusions: Muscle atrophy was associated with preoperative OVCFs in patients with LSS. Identifying OVCFs in these patients may underscore the importance of tailored treatment and rehabilitation strategies for the paraspinal muscles.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify candidate genes that play im-portant roles in skeletal muscle development in ducks. Methods: In this study, we investigated the transcriptional sequencing of embryonic pectoral muscles from two specialized line LCA and LCC ducks which were devel-oped from Liancheng White ducks (female) and Cherry Valley ducks (male) F6 hybrid population. In addition, prediction of target genes for the differentially expressed mRNAs was conducted and the enriched gene ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto En-cyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) signaling pathways were further analyzed. Finally, a protein-to-protein interaction (PPI) network was analyzed by using the tar-get genes to gain insights into their potential functional association. Results: A total of 1428 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with 762 being up-regulated genes and 666 being down-regulated genes in pectoral muscle of LCA and LCC ducks identified by RNA-seq (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, 23 GO terms in the down-regulated genes and 75 GO terms in up-regulated genes were significantly en-riched (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the top 5 most enriched pathways were ECM-receptor interaction, fatty acid degradation, pyruvate degradation, PPAR signaling pathway, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis. Finally, the candidate genes including Integrin b3 (Itgb3), Pyruvate kinase M1/2 (Pkm), Insulin-like growth factor 1 (Igf1), glu-cose-6-phosphate isomerase(Gpi), GABA type A receptor-associated protein-like 1(Gabarapl1), and Thyroid hormone receptor beta (Thrb) showed the most expression difference, and then were selected to verification by qRT-PCR. The result of qRT-PCR was consistent with that of transcriptome sequencing. Conclusion: This study provided information of molecular mechanisms underlying the developmental differences in skeletal muscles between specialized duck lines.

BACKGROUND: Patients with idiopathic scoliosis commonly present with an imbalance of the paraspinal muscles. However, it is unclear whether this muscle imbalance is an underlying cause or a result of idiopathic scoliosis. This study aimed to investigate the role of paraspinal muscles in the development of idiopathic scoliosis based on surface electromyography (sEMG) and radiographic analyses. METHODS: This was a single-center prospective study of 27 patients with single-curve idiopathic scoliosis. Posteroanterior whole-spine radiographs and sEMG activity of the erector spinae muscles were obtained for all patients in the habitual standing position (HSP), relaxed prone position (RPP), and prone extension position (PEP). The Cobb angle, symmetrical index (SI) of the sEMG activity (convex/concave), and correlation between the two factors were analyzed. RESULTS: In the total cohort, the mean Cobb angle in the HSP was significantly greater than the mean Cobb angle in the RPP (RPP-Cobb) (p < 0.001), whereas the mean Cobb angle in the PEP (PEP-Cobb) did not differ from the RPP-Cobb. Thirteen patients had a PEP-Cobb that was significantly smaller than their RPP-Cobb (p = 0.007), while 14 patients had a PEP-Cobb that was significantly larger than their RPP-Cobb (p < 0.001). In the total cohort and two subgroups, the SI of sEMG activity at the apex vertebra (AVSI) in the PEP was significantly greater than 1, revealing significant asymmetry, and was also significantly larger than the AVSI in the RPP. In the RPP, the AVSI was close to 1 in the total cohort and two subgroups, revealing no significant asymmetry. CONCLUSION: The coronal Cobb angle and the SI of paraspinal muscle activity in AIS patients vary with posture changes. Asymmetrical sEMG activity of the paraspinal muscles may be not an inherent feature of AIS patients, but is evident in the challenging tasks. The potential significance of asymmetric paraspinal muscle activity need to be explored in further research.
